Spherical plain bearings are a specialized type of bearing primarily designed to handle radial loads. Their nominal contact angles range from 0° to 45°; depending on the contact angle, they are further classified into radial-contact spherical plain bearings and angular-contact spherical plain bearings. Radial-contact spherical plain bearings have a nominal contact angle of 0° and are mainly used to support radial loads, whereas angular-contact spherical plain bearings have a nominal contact angle greater than 0° but not exceeding 45°, enabling them to simultaneously accommodate both radial and axial loads.

Spherical plain bearings offer high load-carrying capacity and excellent shock resistance, while also exhibiting corrosion resistance, wear resistance, self-aligning capability, and superior lubrication—either with external lubrication or through self-lubrication that minimizes contamination. These characteristics enable spherical plain bearings to operate reliably even when misaligned during installation. Consequently, they are widely used in low-speed oscillating, tilting, and rotary motions.

In applications, radial spherical plain bearings are typically secured within the bore of the intermediate ear plate by a bearing cap. The intermediate ear plate achieves in‑plane and out‑of‑plane rotational performance through the relative rotation of the bearing’s spherical inner and outer rings. Furthermore, the radial spherical plain bearing joint is an essential component of mechanical structures, comprising a rotating core—consisting of the radial spherical plain bearing (with inner and outer rings)—a single‑ear plate, a pin, a pin cap, a locating sleeve, a bearing cap, and a double‑ear plate. It can withstand loads in both tension and pull directions, as well as out‑of‑plane shear forces of a specified magnitude acting in the left–right direction.

In summary, radial spherical bearings are a highly functional and reliably performing bearing type, capable of meeting the demands of diverse and demanding operating environments. However, when selecting and using them, it is essential to choose the appropriate model and specifications based on the actual operating conditions, and to ensure proper installation and maintenance in order to guarantee reliable operation and extend their service life.
